When does a timing belt need replacing?

It is interval-based, not symptom-based, which is what catches people out — a timing belt usually gives no warning before it goes. Intervals vary by manufacturer and engine, commonly somewhere in the 60,000 to 105,000 mile range, and there is often a time limit as well as a mileage one. On an interference engine, a snapped belt lets the valves and pistons collide, which turns a scheduled job into a rebuild. Because the water pump is usually driven by the same belt and sits behind the same covers, it is normally worth replacing both while everything is apart.
