It is the mechanism that turns the rotation of your steering wheel into the side-to-side movement that points the wheels. A pinion gear on the end of the steering shaft meshes with a toothed bar — the rack — which pushes the tie rods left and right. Most vehicles add hydraulic or electric assist to make it lighter.
